Discover Viking Cave in Phi Phi. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
The cave is open every day approximately from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is only accessible by boat tours from the Phi Phi Islands or Phuket. There is no direct land access. We recommend booking with companies such as Phuket Eco Tour for a guided experience.
Entry to the cave is free, but you must pay for boat transportation. Group tours start at 1000 THB (about €28) and include stops at other attractions around the Phi Phi Islands. Check updated prices with operators such as Viator Tours.
The visit lasts between 15 and 30 minutes, as it can only be admired from the boat (entry inside is not allowed). It is a quick stop within full-day tours that include snorkeling and other coves.
Although its name comes from supposed Viking paintings (actually modern graffiti), its real importance lies in the swiftlet nests harvested for Chinese soup. It is a sacred site for local collectors, recognized by Thailand's Department of Marine Resources. More details here.
The dry season (November to April) offers calmer seas. During the day, arrive before 11:00 a.m. or after 3:00 p.m. to avoid crowds. Avoid the monsoon season (May to October), when some tours are canceled.
It is not accessible: boats approach the entrance without fixed piers, and you must go up and down temporary wooden ladders. The visit requires good balance to remain on rocking boats during the viewing.
On the same route you will find: 1) Maya Bay (the beach from 'The Beach'), 2) Pileh Lagoon, 3) Monkey Beach. Operators such as Simba Sea Trips include all of them in combined tours.
1) Wear closed-toe shoes for boarding speedboats, 2) Bring cash for drinks or souvenirs on support boats, 3) Respect local rules: this is an area with a Buddhist shrine, 4) Apply sunscreen and wear a hat: there is no shade on the boats.
