Donde los acantilados esconden lágrimas de tsunamis y nidos comestibles de $600
Access is exclusively by sea; ferries and speedboats depart daily from Phuket and Krabi, generally operating between 8:30 AM and 3:00 PM. Although the island is always open, plan your arrival in advance by checking updated schedules on sites such as 12Go Asia to secure your spot.
When you disembark at Tonsai Pier, you will pay a 20 THB cleaning fee, and to visit protected areas such as Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh, the National Park entry costs 400 THB for adults and 200 THB for children. It is important to carry cash in the local currency (Thai baht), as cards are rarely accepted for these official payments.
Although it is possible to go and return in a single day, I strongly recommend spending at least 2 nights on Phi Phi Don. This will allow you to enjoy the nightlife and, most importantly, hire a private boat early in the morning to see the lagoons before the tourist crowds arrive.
Phi Phi has an incredible history of resilience after being devastated and rebuilt following the 2004 tsunami, and it is also home to ancient maritime settlements. The famous Viking Cave contains prehistoric rock paintings that suggest ancient vessels passed along this trade route centuries ago.
The high season runs from November to April, when the weather is dry and the sea is calm, ideal for diving and boating. If you want to avoid the monsoon rains and enjoy those characteristic emerald waters, avoid September and October.
Accessibility is difficult; there are no motor vehicles on the main island, and the streets, although paved, are narrow and often uneven. In addition, getting on and off traditional longtail boats requires some physical agility, so it is recommended to contact Tourism Authority of Thailand or your hotel for specific options.
In addition to the famous Maya Bay, you should not miss the Phi Phi Viewpoint for the iconic photo of the two bays, or snorkeling at Pileh Lagoon. It is also very popular to visit Monkey Beach to see the macaques in their habitat (but watch your belongings!).
Always negotiate the price of private longtail boats before boarding, and bring coral-safe sunscreen. To enrich your experience and not just 'see' but 'understand' the history of the place, I suggest downloading an audio guide from IAudioguia.com to accompany your tour.
