An ancient Buddhist temple rising on a hill, offering panoramic views and a rich spiritual history in Chiang Rai.
The temple is open daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. It is located in Wiang Kalong, 15 km from Chiang Rai. The most practical way to get there is by taxi or tuk-tuk from the center. For transport options, see Tourism Thailand.
Admission is free, although donations are accepted for the temple's maintenance. No advance ticket purchase is required.
Allow 1 to 2 hours to explore the complex at a relaxed pace, enjoy panoramic views of the Kok River valley, and take part in ceremonies if any are taking place.
Founded more than 1,200 years ago, it is one of the oldest temples in northern Thailand. Its golden stupa houses sacred relics and served as a strategic lookout point in ancient times.
The dry season, from November to February, offers the best conditions. Visit early in the morning, from 8:00 to 10:00 am, or before sunset, from 4:00 to 5:00 pm, to avoid extreme heat and enjoy the best light.
The main access has steep stairs and uneven ground. There is an alternative path on the east side with a gentler slope; we recommend asking the local monks about assisted access.
The famous Wat Rong Khun (White Temple) is 15 km away. Also worth visiting are Baan Dam Museum (Black House) and the Pong Phrabat hot springs.
Wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees, bring comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and water. Respect the sacred areas: remove your shoes before entering and avoid pointing your feet toward Buddha images or monks. More info in this etiquette guide.
