A stunning Alpine peak in the Montreux region of Vaud, Switzerland, reached by a historic cogwheel railway and renowned for its panoramic views and alpine gardens.
The only way to reach it is via the spectacular cogwheel train that departs from Montreux railway station (platform 8) and takes about 55 minutes. Trains run year-round, generally every hour between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., although I recommend checking the exact timetables on the official MOB GoldenPass website.
It is not a free attraction; a round-trip ticket costs around CHF 70 for adults, although prices vary by season. If you have the Swiss Travel Pass, the journey is usually included or heavily discounted, making it much better value.
I suggest allowing at least half a day, around 3 to 4 hours, for the full experience. This includes nearly 2 hours of transport round trip and enough time at the summit to enjoy the views, visit the marmot enclosure, or have something to eat at a relaxed pace.
At 2,042 meters, it is a historic viewpoint that is home to La Rambertia, an alpine garden with more than 1,000 species of mountain plants from around the world. It has been an iconic part of Swiss tourism since the railway opened in 1892, offering a unique panorama over Lake Geneva and the Alps.
For hiking and seeing marmots, summer from June to September is ideal; if you want to visit Santa Claus in his grotto, go in December. Head up early in the morning to avoid the clouds that often form in the afternoon and to secure the clearest views.
The access train, the panoramic restaurant area, and the main terrace are accessible for visitors with reduced mobility. However, the outdoor trails, access to the highest peak, and certain parts of the marmot park have uneven terrain and are not suitable for wheelchairs.
Back down in Montreux, a walk along the lakeside promenade to see the Freddie Mercury statue is a must. In addition, just a few minutes away by bus or boat is the famous Chillon Castle, the most visited historic fortress in Switzerland.
Always bring warm clothing, even in summer, as the temperature at the summit is much lower than in the town. Before buying your ticket, check the live webcam on the GoldenPass website to make sure the view is not covered by fog.
