❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How do we get to Sunnegga and what are the opening hours?

Access is very quick via the underground Sunnegga Express funicular, which departs near the train station in Zermatt and takes only 3 minutes. It generally operates from 8:00 a.m. to 5:20 p.m., although I recommend checking the updated schedules here depending on the season.

How much do tickets cost, and are there any special fares?

The round-trip ticket costs around CHF 26.50 for adults, but if you have the Swiss Travel Pass or the Half Fare Card, you get a 50% discount. Children under 9 usually travel free with the Wolli Card; you can check the exact fares on the official Matterhorn Paradise website.

How much time should we set aside for this visit?

To enjoy the views of the Matterhorn and perhaps have something on the terrace, one hour is enough. However, if you plan to go down to Lake Leisee or take a short walk, I suggest allowing at least half a day (3 to 4 hours) to enjoy the full experience without rushing.

Why is Sunnegga so famous? Is there something special about it?

It is known as Zermatt’s 'sunny corner' and is famous for offering one of the most iconic and photogenic views of the Matterhorn. Historically, it has been a favorite meeting place for families because of its easy access and because it is the gateway to numerous hiking trails.

What is the best season or time of day to go up?

Sunnegga is spectacular all year round: in winter for skiing and in summer for enjoying Lake Leisee. The best time of day is early in the morning to avoid crowds, or at sunset to see the famous alpine glow on the mountains.

Is it accessible for people with reduced mobility or strollers?

Yes, it is very accessible; the funicular is adapted for wheelchairs and strollers. In summer, there is also a small elevator-style funicular, the Wolli Shuttle, which conveniently takes you down from the station to the shore of Lake Leisee.

What other interesting things are there to see near the station?

Just below is Lake Leisee, known as the 'beach of Zermatt,' ideal for a picnic. From Sunnegga, you can also take the gondolas up to Blauherd and Rothorn, or begin the famous Five Lakes Walk.

Any practical tips to make the most of our visit?

Always bring sunglasses and sunscreen, as the sun exposure is strong up there. Don’t forget to download our audio guide at IAudioguia.com to discover the secrets of the landscape as you explore, and remember to bring a camera—the photo of the Matterhorn reflected in the lake is unmissable.
