Donde los santos tienen WiFi celestial y los feligreses tramaron el primer reality show de la Reforma Protestante
The church generally opens Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 17:00, but hours may vary due to religious services or events. We recommend checking directly with the Schaffhausen tourist office before your visit. More information: Schaffhausen Tourism.
Entry to St. John's Church is free, but voluntary donations are appreciated for its upkeep (suggested 2-5 CHF). No prior booking is required for individual visits.
A complete visit takes approximately 30-45 minutes. If you want to appreciate the architectural details, the medieval stained glass windows, or attend a concert on its famous organ, you may need up to 1 hour.
Built in the 11th century, it is one of the oldest Romanesque churches in Switzerland. It stands out for its transition to the Gothic style and its historic organ. Its tower served as a landmark for Rhine navigators for centuries.
Early morning hours (before 11:00) are usually quieter. Weekdays have fewer tourists than weekends. Sunny afternoons offer the best lighting to admire its stained glass windows.
The main nave has step-free access, but the tower and the medieval crypt are not wheelchair accessible. There are 2 steps at the secondary access - we recommend using the main entrance from Vorstadt.
A 5-minute walk away you will find the Munot (16th-century fortress with panoramic views), and 15 minutes away the famous Rhine Falls (Rheinfall). We also recommend the historic old town with its painted houses: Rheinfall.
Dress respectfully (no shorts or sleeveless tops during services), remain silent if worship is in progress. On Tuesdays at midday you can enjoy free organ concerts. Avoid flash photography on the stained glass windows.
