Pequeña capilla alpina en Riederalp, Suiza, dedicada a San Bernardo de Menthon, protector de los viajeros en las montañas. Un rincón sereno con vistas impresionantes al macizo del Mischabel.
The chapel is open year-round, 24 hours a day, as it is a religious site accessible to the public. To get there, take the cable car from Brig to Riederalp and then follow a walking trail of about 30 minutes; check the official Riederalp website for cable car schedules.
Visiting is completely free, with no tickets or reservations required. You will only pay for cable car transport to Riederalp, around 30-40 CHF round trip per adult.
It is recommended to allow 30-45 minutes for the chapel itself, including time for photos and quiet contemplation. If you include the access trail, plan for 1-1.5 hours in total.
Built in 1687, the chapel was erected as an offering to protect the valley from avalanches and storms, honoring St. Bernard of Menthon, patron saint of mountaineers. It represents Alpine devotion and is part of the cultural heritage of Valais.
Summer (June-September) is ideal thanks to good weather and accessible trails, preferably at sunrise or sunset for spectacular views of the Alps. Avoid winter if you are not equipped for snow.
It is not wheelchair accessible or suitable for visitors with reduced mobility, as it requires a steep 30-minute trail with elevation gain. Those with mobility difficulties should consider alternatives in central Riederalp.
Nearby you will find the Aletsch Glacier, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, accessible via the Moosfluh cable car, as well as the Riederalp ski area. You can also explore Lake Möraine, a 20-minute walk away; more information is available on MySwitzerland.
Bring hiking shoes, water, and sunscreen, as the trail is rocky. Visit with an audio guide if you want detailed history, and check the weather in the MeteoSwiss app before you go.
