Donde un santo sin cabeza vigila secretos centenarios y gatos de piedra gobiernan los tejados
The Cathedral is open from Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 18:00 in summer (June-September). In winter it closes at 16:00. We recommend checking exact hours before your visit on the Chur Tourism website or by calling +41 81 254 99 99.
Admission is free, although donations for maintenance are appreciated (suggested 5 CHF). Organized groups should arrange their visit in advance with the parish office.
A standard visit lasts between 45 and 60 minutes. If you want to explore details such as the 12th-century crypt or the Gothic frescoes, allow at least 1 hour and 15 minutes.
It is the oldest cathedral in Switzerland (construction began in 1151) and shows the transition from late Romanesque to early Gothic. It has been an episcopal seat since the 5th century and houses unique medieval relics.
Early in the morning (10:00-11:30) or outside the high season (October-May). Avoid Sunday mornings during religious services.
It has partial accessibility: the main nave is accessible, but the crypt and some side altars have steps. There is an alternative entrance with a ramp - ask at the information desk.
A 5-minute walk away you will find the Rhaetian Museum (regional history), the medieval Arcas Gate, and the old town with 18th-century bourgeois houses. See the map on Chur Tourism.
Wear comfortable shoes (the stone floor is uneven), visit the panoramic terrace for views of the Alps, and check Mass times if you are looking for quiet (kath-chur.ch). In summer, arrive before 11:00 to avoid tour groups.
