A dreamlike alpine lake, surrounded by green meadows and high mountains, a reflection of Swiss natural purity.
As it is a natural alpine lake, it is accessible 24 hours a day, but the access road (Gental) is usually open from June to October. You can drive there by paying a toll from Innertkirchen or take the cable cars from Engelberg to Jochpass and walk to the lake; check the current status on the Engelberg Tourismus website.
Access to the lake itself is free, as nature charges no entrance fee. However, you should consider the cost of the private road toll (approx. 32 CHF) or the cable car tickets if you come from the Titlis area.
I suggest setting aside at least 2 to 3 hours to soak up the calm of the place without rushing. This will give you enough time for a relaxed walk along the shore, a picnic, or even a bit of rowing if you rent a boat.
The Engstlensee is known as a powerful 'place of power' (Kraftort) in local mythology, famous for recharging the energy of its visitors. It also lies next to the historic Hotel Engstlenalp, which has welcomed travellers and adventurers in the Alps for generations.
Without a doubt, early autumn (September-October) is spectacular because the deep blue water contrasts with the golden colours of the vegetation and the mountains, and there are usually fewer people. Summer is also ideal if you want to see cows grazing and alpine flowers at their peak.
Access is possible if you drive up the toll road to Hotel Engstlenalp, where the terrain is relatively flat. However, the trails around the lake are natural gravel paths, so it is recommended to go with a companion or contact the Hotel Engstlenalp to check specific conditions.
You are in the heart of the famous 'Four Lakes Trail' (Vier-Seen-Wanderung); very close by is the Jochpass mountain pass that connects to Lake Trübsee. If you enjoy adventure, the Titlis region offers suspension bridges and ice caves just a few kilometres away by cable car.
Bring cash for the road toll or to rent a rowing boat on site, as the internet connection for digital payments can fail at altitude. If you want the perfect Instagram photo, arrive at dawn when the water is like a mirror reflecting the snow-capped peaks.
