❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What are the opening hours and how do I get to the waterfall?

You can admire the waterfall from the valley 24 hours a day, but the rock gallery for walking behind the curtain of water generally opens from May to October, between 8:00 and 20:00. It is easy to reach on foot in about 10–15 minutes from Lauterbrunnen train station by following the clearly visible signs.

Do I need to buy tickets or pay any fee to visit?

Visiting Staubbach Falls is completely free, both to see them from the base and to walk up the trail and enter the gallery carved into the rock. It is one of the best free natural attractions in the Jungfrau region.

How much time should I set aside for the full visit?

I recommend allowing 30 to 45 minutes if you plan to climb the steep path to the gallery and enjoy the views. If you only want to take photos from the valley and enjoy the scenery, about 15 minutes will be enough.

What makes this waterfall so historically famous?

At nearly 300 meters high, it is one of the tallest free-falling waterfalls in Europe and became an icon of Romanticism. It inspired the celebrated Johann Wolfgang von Goethe to write his poem 'Song of the Spirits over the Waters' after his visit in 1779.

What is the best season or time of day to go?

The best time is in early summer or after rainy days, when the flow is at its strongest and the roar is impressive. As for the time of day, morning is ideal for seeing how the sun lights up the water droplets and creates rainbows before the valley falls into shadow.

Is it accessible for people with reduced mobility?

The base of the waterfall and the path through the Lauterbrunnen Valley are flat and wheelchair accessible. However, the climb to the gallery and the viewpoint behind the waterfall requires going up a steep path and steps, so it is not suitable for people with reduced mobility.

What other must-see attractions are nearby?

A very short distance away are the spectacular Trümmelbach Falls, which are underground glacial waterfalls. You can also take the cogwheel train up to the car-free village of Wengen or head to the famous Schilthorn.

I have read that it gets quite wet—any practical advice for the visit?

Yes, when you go up to the gallery the spray is constant, so bring a light rain jacket and footwear with good non-slip soles because the ground is often wet. Protect your camera or phone if you want to take photos from the upper viewpoint.
