A natural space that blends education, conservation, and fun in the heart of Bern.
Dählhölzli Zoo is open every day, all year round, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (or 6:00 p.m. in summer). You can check the exact opening hours and how to get there by public transport or car on its official website: Dählhölzli Zoo - Opening Hours and Information. It is very easy to reach from central Bern.
The good news is that access to most of the outdoor areas of Dählhölzli Zoo is free. Only the indoor vivarium requires a small admission fee. You can find more details about possible charges and vivarium prices here: Dählhölzli Zoo - Prices.
To fully enjoy the entire park, including the vivarium and a walk along the Aare River, we recommend allowing at least 2 to 3 hours. If you are visiting with children or enjoy watching animals at a relaxed pace, you could easily extend your visit to half a day.
Dählhölzli Zoo has a rich history dating back to 1937 and has become a key institution in animal conservation and education in Switzerland. It is unique because it blends harmoniously into the beautiful natural landscape along the Aare River, serving as an important green space as well as a research and breeding center for endangered species. More information about its history and mission: Dählhölzli Zoo - Our History and Mission.
Spring and autumn are usually the best seasons thanks to the pleasant weather and animal activity. Early in the morning or late in the afternoon, just before closing, animals tend to be more active. In summer, avoid the middle of the day because of the heat.
Yes, the park is designed to be largely accessible. Most paths are flat or gently sloped, making them suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. There are adapted restrooms and some areas with special access. You can check an accessibility map on the website: Dählhölzli Zoo - Accessibility.
The zoo is strategically located. Nearby you will find the scenic Aare River, Bern Botanic Garden, and of course Bern’s Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its famous Zytglogge and Bear Pit. Consider a boat trip on the Aare for a different kind of experience.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, bringing water, and, if you are visiting with family, a few snacks. There are picnic areas. Download the park map in advance or use the app, if available, to plan your route. Do not miss the vivarium and the aquarium—they are impressive. And always remember to respect the animals.
