A medieval fortress in Bellinzona, part of the UNESCO World Heritage fortifications complex.
The castle courtyard is usually open year-round, but the Archaeological Museum inside generally opens from late March to November, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. You can reach it on foot from the center of Bellinzona (about a 15–20 minute uphill walk) or by car, as parking is available near the entrance.
Access to the outer courtyards is free, but an admission ticket is required to visit the museum inside (approximately CHF 10 for adults). The best option is usually the "Bellinzona Pass", which includes all three castles; you can check updated prices on the official Bellinzona tourism website.
To walk along the walls, enjoy the panoramic views, and visit the museum at a relaxed pace, I recommend setting aside between 45 minutes and one hour. It is an ideal visit to combine into a morning or afternoon with the other castles in the area.
This castle has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000 and dates back to the 13th century, originally built by the Rusca family. It is the middle castle of Bellinzona’s fortifications and stands out for preserving its defensive medieval appearance almost intact.
Spring and autumn are ideal because of the mild weather and the colors of the Ticino landscape. I suggest going at sunset, when the golden light on the walls and the views over the valley create an unmatched setting for photography.
The exterior can be reached by vehicle up to the entrance, and there are ramps in certain areas of the courtyard, but the interior and the walls can be difficult because this is a historic structure with uneven surfaces and stairs. It is recommended to contact the local tourist office to arrange assistance if necessary.
Since you are in Bellinzona, it is essential to visit the other two UNESCO castles: Castelgrande (accessible by elevator from the square) and Sasso Corbaro (the highest). You can also stroll through the city’s charming historic center and its Saturday market.
Wear comfortable shoes for walking on the cobblestones, and take advantage of the fact that Montebello is less crowded than Castelgrande to enjoy a picnic in its green areas. For an immersive experience, download our audio guide at IAudioguia.com and discover the secrets the stones do not tell you.
