Bannalp Lake, a mirror of alpine water in the heart of Switzerland, offers an experience of natural serenity and pastoral tradition.
The main access is by cable car from Oberrickenbach (not directly from Meiringen; it is located in the canton of Nidwalden). The cable cars to Chrüzhütte or Bannalp Lake usually operate from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., but it is essential to check the current schedule on the official Bannalp website before going up.
Enjoying the lake and its surroundings is free; the cost is in the transport. A round-trip cable car ticket costs approximately 23 CHF for adults (with discounts for children and SBB card holders), and tickets are usually purchased directly at the base station in Oberrickenbach.
For a complete experience, set aside at least half a day (around 3 to 4 hours). This will allow you to walk the circular lake trail (about 1 hour) at a relaxed pace and enjoy a picnic in the designated areas without rushing.
Bannalp Lake is a reservoir that represents the Swiss harmony between energy generation and nature conservation. It is considered a place of great scenic beauty and tranquility, locally famous for the 'Dwarf Trail,' a themed path based on regional gnome legends.
The ideal season runs from June to October, when the snow has melted and the trails are green and full of alpine flowers. If you are looking for absolute peace and great photography, I suggest going early on a weekday morning or in autumn to see the golden colors.
Access is limited; although the cable car takes you up, the paths around the lake are mountain trails with gravel and uneven slopes. It is not recommended for standard wheelchairs, although families with sturdy all-terrain strollers may manage certain sections with effort.
In addition to the famous Dwarf Trail for children at the lake itself, the valley station at Oberrickenbach is close to Engelberg. From there you can visit famous Mount Titlis or the Engelberg Monastery to complete a perfect alpine day.
Bring cash (coins) for parking tickets or small purchases at alpine farms. Make the most of the barbecue areas ('fire pits'), which often have free firewood available; buying sausages and local bread to cook there is the ultimate Swiss experience.
