A Renaissance fortress that witnessed coronations and historic treaties in the heart of Uppsala.
Uppsala Castle houses different institutions with varying opening hours. Uppsala Castle itself, for example, has hours that change with the season. I strongly recommend checking the official Uppsala Castle website or the Uppsala Tourist Information Center for the most up-to-date hours and access details. It is conveniently located in the city center and can be reached on foot from the train station.
The good news is that much of the Uppsala Castle grounds, including its outer courtyards and beautiful gardens, can be visited free of charge. However, some attractions inside, such as the Uppsala Art Museum or the Uppsala Peace House, may charge admission. I suggest checking the specific prices for each place you want to visit.
It depends on your level of interest. If you only want to walk around the exterior and enjoy the views, 1 to 2 hours may be enough. But if you plan to visit the Art Museum, the Peace House, and perhaps stop for a coffee, I recommend setting aside at least 3 to 4 hours. You could easily spend half a day exploring at a relaxed pace.
Uppsala Castle is of enormous historical importance. It was built in the 16th century under King Gustav Vasa and was the setting for some of the most crucial events in Swedish history, including the coronation of several monarchs and decisions that shaped the nation. It is a symbol of the monarchy and of royal power in early modern Sweden.
Personally, I would recommend spring, from May to June, or late summer, from August to September, when the weather is pleasant and the gardens are at their best. To avoid crowds, try to go early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Weekdays are also usually quieter than weekends.
Uppsala Castle has made efforts to be as accessible as possible. Much of the exterior and some interior sections are accessible. However, because of its historic nature, some areas may have stairs or uneven ground. I advise contacting the castle administration directly or the Uppsala Tourist Information Center for specific accessibility details for your visit.
Uppsala is full of history. Right next to the castle, you can find the impressive Uppsala Cathedral, the national church of Sweden. I also recommend the Gustavianum, the Uppsala University Museum, and a walk through the charming Botanical Garden (Botaniska trädgården). Everything is within walking distance!
Absolutely! Wear comfortable shoes, as there is quite a bit of walking. Consider charging your phone for photos and check available audio guides, such as those we might offer at IAudioguia.com, for a more immersive experience. Don’t forget to enjoy the panoramic views from the castle hill, they are spectacular. And finally, don’t limit yourself to the exterior; explore the museums housed inside as well.
