The gardens are open year-round from dawn to dusk, while the adjacent castle is open from May to September, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. You can get there by train from Stockholm to Mariefred station (1 hour) or by car via Road 223; there is free parking nearby. More details are available on the official SFV website.
Admission to the gardens is free for all visitors. If you want to enter the castle, it costs 160 SEK for adults (children up to 18 enter free); discounts are available for students and seniors. Buy tickets at this official link.
It is recommended to allow 1–2 hours to walk through the gardens and enjoy the views. If you also include the castle, plan for about 3 hours in total. It is ideal for a relaxed visit without rushing.
The Renaissance gardens date back to the 16th century and surround the castle built by Gustav I Vasa, a landmark of the Swedish monarchy with a vast collection of royal portraits. They are a perfect example of historic Scandinavian garden design, restored to preserve their original charm. Visit them to experience Sweden’s living history.
The best time is from June to August, when the flowers are in full bloom and the weather is warm (15–25°C). Go early in the morning to avoid crowds and enjoy the best light for photos. Avoid winter because of the cold and darkness.
The gardens have paved paths in the main areas that are accessible for wheelchairs, but some parts are steep or gravel-covered. The castle offers wheelchair loans; contact +46 159 101 39 for assistance. Check for updates on the official website.
In Mariefred, visit Öja Church (a 5-minute walk away) and the harbor for a cruise on Lake Mälaren. Strängnäs Castle is a 30-minute drive away. Explore the charming town of Mariefred with its cafés and shops.
Wear comfortable shoes for walking along the paths, bring mosquito repellent in summer, and carry water, as there are not many fountains. Download an audio guide app to enrich the experience and book castle tickets in advance during high season. Leave time for a picnic in the meadows!
