Varamon Beach is one of the largest and most beautiful freshwater beaches in Northern Europe, a true natural paradise in Motala.
The beach is open 24 hours a day year-round, as it is a public space. You can easily reach it by car via Road 50, with free parking available nearby; there are also bicycle routes and public transport from Motala. More details on the official Visit Motala website.
Admission to Varamon Beach is completely free, with no charge for access or parking. Just consider optional expenses such as food at nearby beach bars, if available.
It is recommended to allow between 1 and 2 hours to enjoy swimming, walks, and a picnic, although you can extend it to half a day if you plan to swim or have a barbecue. It is ideal for short or relaxed visits.
Varamon is an iconic beach beside Lake Vättern, one of Sweden’s largest lakes, valued for its fine sand and crystal-clear waters for decades as a family leisure destination. It represents the natural beauty of Östergötland and is part of Motala’s tourism heritage.
Summer (June to August) is ideal because of the good weather and swimming conditions, preferably in the morning or at sunset to avoid crowds. In spring and autumn, it is perfect for peaceful walks with fewer tourists.
It has paved paths and ramps leading to the main beach area, making wheelchair access easier, although the sand can be challenging. We recommend checking updated conditions on Visit Motala or calling +46 141 22 33 00.
Nearby you will find the Motala Motorcycle Museum about 10 minutes away by car, and Motala Harbour for boat trips on Lake Vättern. You can also explore Motala’s historic town center.
Bring sunscreen, a towel, water, and a picnic, as there are free barbecue areas; follow fire and litter rules. In summer, arrive early to secure parking and avoid weekends if you are looking for peace and quiet.
