Donde las paredes rojas susurran tragedias mineras, peleas de vallas y hasta recetas medievales contra duendes
As it is a historic, inhabited residential district, the streets are open 24 hours a day for public access. However, if you want a guided tour or to enter specific buildings, you should check the opening hours of the Falun Mine Museum, which usually operates during business hours.
Walking through the district and admiring the exterior architecture is completely free, as it is public space. You only need to pay if you choose to book an official guided tour to explore the history in depth or access the mine exhibitions.
To enjoy the atmosphere at a relaxed pace and take good photos, we recommend setting aside between 45 minutes and one hour. If you plan to combine it with a visit to the adjacent Great Copper Mine, you should allow at least half a day.
This district is a time capsule showing how early copper miners lived, famous for its wooden houses painted in the iconic 'Falun Red.' It is a crucial part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and miraculously survived the great historic fires.
Summer (June to August) is ideal because of the pleasant weather and the full availability of guided tours. However, visiting Elsborg in winter, with the red houses covered in snow, offers a magical and silent postcard-like scene that is hard to match.
You should take care, as many streets preserve the original cobblestones and uneven ground, which can make wheelchair access difficult. It is recommended to go with a companion or ask the local tourist office about the flattest routes.
You are literally next to the famous Falu Gruva (Copper Mine), a must-see visit. You can also walk toward the center to visit the Dalarna Museum, which is about a 15–20 minute walk away.
Wear very comfortable, sturdy shoes because of the old cobblestones. Also, remember that this is a residential area where real people still live today, so please respect the neighbors' privacy and do not enter private properties or gardens.
