Sigiriya is open daily from 7:30 to 17:30. It is easily reached from Sri Lanka’s main highway; take a tuk-tuk or taxi from Dambulla or Habarana, and parking is available at the entrance.
Admission costs around USD 30 (about LKR 4,500) for foreign adults, and it is cheaper for locals and children. It includes access to the rock, gardens, and frescoes; buy the ticket at the main office.
Plan about 3 to 4 hours for the climb up the rock, exploring the gardens, and walking the walls. If you take it slowly, especially in the heat, it can easily extend to half a day.
Sigiriya was a palace-fortress built in the 5th century by King Kashyapa, who killed his father to usurp the throne. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its frescoes, hydraulic gardens, and unique architecture.
The best season is from December to March, the dry season with pleasant weather. Go early in the morning (around 8:00) to avoid the intense heat and crowds.
It is not wheelchair accessible because of the 1,200 steep steps to the top. Visitors with reduced mobility can enjoy the lower gardens, but the main rock requires good physical condition.
Nearby are the Dambulla Cave Temple (20 km away), the Dambulla Golden Temple, and Pidurangala Rock for panoramic views. Combine it with a regional tour to make the most of your trip.
Bring water, sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable shoes for the climb; avoid midday because of the heat. Download an audio guide at IAudioguia to enrich your visit with explanations in English, and book in advance during high season via the official website.
