Monte do Castro is an open-air public space, so it is accessible 24 hours a day. If you are driving, parking is available. For public transport, several Vitrasa city bus lines connect to the area, such as L23 and L17, which leave you very close to the main entrance. Check the routes on the Vitrasa website.
Excellent news: entry to Monte do Castro and access to its hillfort ruins and gardens are completely free. It is a public park managed by the Vigo City Council, designed for everyone to enjoy.
To fully enjoy Monte do Castro, including the archaeological site, the gardens, and the panoramic views, we recommend allowing between 1 hour and 1 hour 30 minutes. If you would like a more relaxed walk or to soak up the atmosphere, you could extend it to 2 hours.
Monte do Castro is the origin of Vigo. Its archaeological site takes us back to the Iron Age, with remains of a hillfort settlement dating from the 3rd century BC. It is a silent witness to the first human settlements in the Vigo estuary, a true journey back in time.
Any time is a good time, but if you are looking for the best conditions, spring and autumn offer mild temperatures and fewer crowds. If you want to enjoy spectacular views, sunset is magical, with the Vigo estuary turning orange and the boats returning to port.
Monte do Castro has paved paths and ramps in several sections, which makes access easier to many of its areas, including some panoramic viewpoints. However, because it is sloping terrain and there are stairs in some parts of the archaeological site, full accessibility may be limited at specific points. Caution is recommended.
There are plenty of options. From Monte do Castro, you can walk down to Vigo city centre. Very close by you have the Vialia shopping centre for shops and dining, Vigo-Urzaiz railway station, and within walking distance, the popular historic quarter of O Berbés, with its famous oyster stalls, and the Puerta del Sol with 'The Siren', the epicentre of life in Vigo.
A key tip is to wear comfortable shoes, as there is walking involved and the terrain has changes in elevation. If you are going on a sunny day, do not forget sun protection and water. Also, consider using your mobile phone with headphones to enjoy an audio guide and immerse yourself fully in the history of Castro. And of course, bring your camera to capture the views.
