❓ Frequently Asked Questions

When is the park open and how can I get there?

Serra da Enciña de Lastra Natural Park is open all year round and entry is free. The visitor center, 'Casa do Parque' in Covas (Rubiá), is open from Thursday to Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (in winter until 6:00 p.m.). You can get there via the OU-622 road from O Barco de Valdeorras. More information at Tourism of Galicia.

Is visiting the park free, or do I have to pay an entrance fee?

Access to the park is completely free. If you want to join organized guided visits, such as boat routes through the Sil Canyon, some may have a cost. Check the options at Official Ribeira Sacra.

How much time is recommended for visiting the park?

We recommend setting aside half a day for short routes such as the Covas Viewpoint, or a full day if you plan more demanding hiking like the Route of the Crags trail (16 km). Do not forget extra time to see the karst caves!

Why is Serra da Enciña de Lastra important?

It is a geological treasure with limestone formations unique in Galicia and a refuge for 30 species of wild orchids. The old tungsten mines used during World War II are also especially notable. More details at Department of the Environment.

What is the best time of year to visit?

Spring (April to June) to see the orchid bloom, and autumn (September to October) for the forest colors. Avoid July and August because of extreme heat, which can reach 40°C in lower areas.

Is the park accessible for people with reduced mobility?

The natural terrain is rugged, but the visitor center and viewpoints such as O Cabalón (OU-622, km 8) are accessible. Contact Casa do Parque (+34 988 386 215 or [email protected]) for specific advice.

What other interesting places are near the park?

Do not miss: 1) the Sil Canyon (Cividade viewpoint), 2) the Monastery of Santo Estevo (30 minutes by car), and 3) Ribeira Sacra with its heroic vineyards. More inspiration at Ribeira Sacra Route.

What recommendations would you give for a good visit?

Mountain footwear is essential; bring water, as there are no fountains on the routes, and use sun protection. Check the weather before you go, since it often changes suddenly. At Casa do Parque, staff will guide you for free on the best trails for your level.
