Donde los piratas berberiscos, contrabandistas de whisky y mosquitos con pedigree escribieron una historia de churros y mantas
Maro Beach is open 24 hours a day all year round, as it is a natural beach within the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park. To get there, you can park in the village of Maro and follow a path of about 20–30 minutes down the cliff; there is also car access via the N-340 to the viewpoint. For more details, see the official Andalusia tourism website.
Maro Beach is completely free to visit, with no tickets or access fees required. However, if you plan to use services such as parking in the village of Maro, there may be a small cost. There are no paid restrictions to enjoy the beach itself.
It is recommended to allow at least 2–3 hours to get there, enjoy a swim, and explore the nearby coves. If you want to go hiking or have a picnic, it could easily become a half-day visit. It is ideal for a relaxed visit without rushing.
Maro Beach is part of the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park and is an example of protected unspoiled coastline on the Costa del Sol, with rocky formations and crystal-clear waters that highlight its ecological value. Historically, it has been a natural refuge for local fishermen and is now a place of interest for marine biodiversity and the scenic heritage of Nerja. Its conservation underlines the importance of preserving these coves from mass tourism development.
The best time is during summer (June to September) for swimming, but avoid the peak midday hours because of the heat; choose early morning or late afternoon instead. In spring or autumn, the weather is milder and there are fewer tourists, making it ideal for a peaceful walk.
The main access involves a steep, rocky path of about 500 meters, so it is not recommended for people with reduced mobility or wheelchair users. There are accessible views from the upper viewpoint, but reaching the beach itself requires good physical condition. For alternatives, contact Nerja Town Hall at +34 952 52 11 00.
Nearby you will find the Nerja Caves, about 10 km away, with impressive prehistoric formations; Burriana Beach, ideal for families; and the town of Nerja with the Balcony of Europe. You can also visit the Maro Cliffs for hiking. Explore more on the official Nerja website.
Bring comfortable shoes for the trail, water, sunscreen, and food, as there are no services on the beach. Respect the natural environment by not leaving litter and do not feed the wildlife. If you go in summer, arrive early to avoid crowds and book parking in Maro in advance.
