¿Sabías que una mujer sola defendió esta torre contra cientos de indígenas furiosos? Escucha la historia que te dejará boquiabierto.
The tower is usually open to the public from Monday to Friday, generally from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., although hours may vary depending on the season. It stands in the middle of Count's Tower Park, which you can easily reach on foot from the port or the center of San Sebastián de La Gomera.
Admission to the interior of Count's Tower is currently free. It is a publicly funded cultural visit, so you do not need to buy tickets or book in advance to explore this historic monument.
The visit inside is fairly quick; it will take you about 20 to 30 minutes to explore its floors and see the historical cartography exhibition. If you also decide to stroll through the surrounding park gardens, you can extend your visit to a relaxed hour.
It is the oldest preserved military fortification in the Canary Islands archipelago, built around 1447, and a symbol of the island. It is historically crucial because it served as a refuge for feudal elites during Indigenous uprisings and is linked to the era of Christopher Columbus's voyages.
I recommend going early in the morning to avoid large groups and the midday heat, or at sunset to enjoy the exterior lighting. If you want to go inside the building, make sure to arrive before the weekday midday closing time.
Count's Tower Park is flat and accessible for wheelchairs. However, access to the upper floors of the tower is via narrow original staircases, which makes entry to the interior difficult for people with reduced mobility.
You are in the historic heart of the town; nearby you will find the Church of the Assumption and the Archaeological Museum. To enrich your visit to these sites, we recommend bringing a digital audio guide to reveal the secrets of every corner.
Do not stop at the ground floor; go up to the rooftop if it is allowed at that time so you can enjoy a good view of the park and the bay. Also, take the opportunity to read the old maps displayed inside, which explain the defensive evolution of the island.
