Discover the untamed magic of Punta de Teno, the northwestern tip of the island of Tenerife, where nature meets history.
Access to Punta de Teno by private vehicle is restricted for much of the day to protect the natural area. From 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (in summer, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.), access is only possible by bus from Buenavista del Norte, line 365, or by taxi. Outside those hours, access by private car is allowed. You can check the details on the Titsa website: Line 365 routes and timetables.
Entry to Punta de Teno and access to the area are completely free. The only thing you would need to pay for is the bus ticket if you decide to go by public transport during restricted hours, or a taxi.
To enjoy the scenery at a relaxed pace, take photos, and walk around the lighthouse area, a typical visit usually lasts between 1.5 and 2 hours. If you feel like taking a short walk along the nearby trails, you could extend your visit a bit longer.
Punta de Teno is unique for its scenic and geological value. It is part of Teno Rural Park, one of Tenerife’s oldest protected natural areas and one of the richest in biodiversity. Its lighthouse, the Punta de Teno Lighthouse, is an iconic symbol and one of the few lighthouses in the Canary Islands that can be reached by land, offering spectacular views of the Cliffs of Los Gigantes. It is a meeting point between volcanic land and the vast Atlantic.
Sunsets at Punta de Teno are spectacular, with the sun setting over the Atlantic and bathing the Cliffs of Los Gigantes in golden and reddish tones. It is a magical moment, although it is also when there are usually the most people. Early in the morning, just when private access closes, it is also ideal for enjoying the peace and quiet. Any time of year is good, but in winter the temperatures are milder and the landscape is just as impressive.
The main access to the lighthouse area from the bus stop is relatively flat and paved, which makes movement easier for wheelchair users or people with strollers. However, the trails or paths beyond the main area may be uneven and rocky, which limits accessibility in those areas. For more specific details, it is always advisable to contact the Buenavista del Norte Tourist Office: Buenavista del Norte Tourism.
While in Buenavista del Norte, you should not miss the town’s historic center with its traditional charm. Nearby you also have the Buenavista golf course, designed by Severiano Ballesteros. And if you enjoy hiking, Teno Rural Park offers many routes. In addition, the Cliffs of Los Gigantes are very close and you can see them from Punta de Teno; you can also go to Masca, a remote and picturesque village, although its road is spectacular but challenging.
Definitely: bring water, sunscreen, and a cap or hat, as the area is very exposed to the sun and wind. If you are going during restricted hours, plan the bus timetable well so you do not have to wait too long. Wear comfortable shoes if you want to walk a little over the rocks. And most importantly: respect the surroundings, do not leave litter, and stay on the marked paths. The peace and beauty of this place will leave you speechless!
