Discover S'Albufera des Grau Natural Park in Minorca. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
The park is open year-round, 24 hours a day, although visiting during daylight hours is recommended for safety. You can reach it by car via the Me-7 road from Mahón or Es Mercadal, or by public transport on local buses; there is free parking near the main entrance. For more details, see the official website of the Government of the Balearic Islands.
Admission to the park is free for all visitors, with no advance reservation required. However, if you choose organized guided tours, small fees may apply; check at the visitor center. This makes it an accessible option for families and hikers.
It is recommended to allow at least 2 to 3 hours to walk the main trails and observe wildlife, although a full visit could extend to 4 hours if you include birdwatching. Depending on your pace, it is ideal for a relaxed morning or afternoon. Plan according to your fitness level so you can enjoy it without rushing.
Declared a Natural Park in 1992, S'Albufera des Grau is a key wetland in Minorca, part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993, protecting rich biodiversity with more than 200 bird species and unique ecosystems such as dunes and marshes. Its importance lies in conserving endemic flora and controlling natural flooding. It is an outstanding example of Balearic natural heritage.
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are ideal because of bird migration and mild weather, avoiding the summer heat. Sunrise and sunset are perfect times of day for the best sightings. Avoid July and August if you prefer fewer crowds and more pleasant temperatures.
Some main trails are adapted with wooden walkways and are accessible for wheelchairs, but the natural terrain can be uneven in more remote areas. The visitor center offers information and loans of adapted wheelchairs; contact +34 971 177 720 for assistance in advance. Visiting during daylight hours is recommended for greater ease.
Nearby you will find the city of Mahón, about 15 km away, with its historic harbor and the Museum of Minorca, or the beaches of Es Grau and Arenal d'en Castell. You can also explore Favàritx Lighthouse or the Talayotic settlement of Torre d'en Galmés, 20 to 30 minutes away by car. These options complement a route through northern Minorca.
Bring insect repellent, sunscreen, water, and comfortable shoes for the trails; binoculars are essential for birdwatching. Respect the rules by staying only in designated areas and download maps from the Minorca tourism portal. Visit in a group if you are new to hiking for greater safety.
