Discover Playa de Ses Illetes in Formentera. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
Playa de Ses Illetes is a natural beach, so it does not have official 'opening' or 'closing' hours, but we recommend visiting during the day to enjoy the sun and the sea. It is located in the Ses Salines Natural Park of Formentera, and you can get there by bicycle, electric scooter, bus, or car/motorbike. Keep in mind that if you arrive by motor vehicle, there is an access fee to help preserve the environment. You can find more details on the official website: Ses Salines Natural Park.
Access to Playa de Ses Illetes itself is free, but if you arrive by car or motorbike during the high season (generally from May to October), there is a vehicle access fee to control capacity and protect the natural surroundings. The cost varies depending on the type of vehicle; bicycles and pedestrians enter free of charge. We recommend checking the updated rates on the Formentera Council website: Formentera Council.
To fully enjoy Ses Illetes and make the most of its crystal-clear waters, we recommend spending at least half a day there, around 3 to 4 hours. This gives you enough time to relax, swim several times, walk along the shore, and perhaps even eat at one of the beach bars in the area. If you love nature or water sports, you could easily spend even longer.
The importance of Ses Illetes lies in its exceptional natural beauty and its location within the Ses Salines Natural Park of Formentera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its dunes, fine white sand, turquoise waters, and rich Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows (responsible for the clarity of the water) make it a paradise. It does not have a 'history' like a museum; rather, its value is purely ecological and scenic, making it one of the finest examples of an unspoiled Mediterranean beach.
The best time to visit Ses Illetes and avoid the biggest crowds is during the low or shoulder season (May, early June, September, and October). During the day, the early morning hours (before 10:00 a.m.) or late afternoon (after 5:00 p.m.) are usually quieter and offer beautiful light. In peak summer (July and August), it can be very crowded, especially around midday.
The main access area of the Ses Illetes Natural Park has paths that may be manageable, but once on the beach, moving across the fine sand can be challenging. Some areas near the parking zones may have wooden walkways, but full wheelchair access to the shoreline is limited. We recommend contacting the Formentera Tourist Office for more detailed and up-to-date information about adapted services: Phone (+34) 971 32 20 57.
Very close to Ses Illetes, you can visit the rest of the Ses Salines Natural Park, including the saltwater lagoons where flamingos can often be seen. You can also walk to Llevant Beach, which is just on the other side of the narrow peninsula, or head to the port of La Savina, where you will find more services and restaurants. If you want a more bohemian plan, the hippie market in Es Pujols is a short drive or bus ride away.
Of course! Arrive early to secure a good spot and avoid the strongest heat. Do not forget to bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and plenty of water, as the beach bars can be expensive. If you enjoy adventure, rent a bike and explore the park trails. And please, respect the natural environment by not leaving rubbish behind and by using authorised services only!
