❓ Frequently Asked Questions

When is Borbollón Reservoir open and how can I get there?

The reservoir is freely accessible 24 hours a day, but we recommend visiting during daylight for safety and better views. It can be reached from Moraleja (15 minutes by car) via the EX-109. During periods of heavy rain or extreme drought, check conditions with the Spanish Water Information System.

Do I have to pay an entrance fee to visit?

No, it is completely free. There are no ticket offices or tickets, but we do recommend carrying cash for nearby local businesses such as those in Moraleja, as some do not accept cards.

How much time is needed to fully enjoy the visit?

Ideally, set aside half a day (3–4 hours), especially if you walk the 6 km perimeter trail. If you only want panoramic views from lookouts such as Casas de Don Antonio, 1 hour is enough.

What historical importance does this reservoir have?

Built in 1956 on the Árrago River, it was key to the agricultural development of the region. Today it is a Special Protection Area for Birds, with more than 200 recorded species. More information is available on the Extremadura Tourism Portal.

What time of year is best to visit?

Spring (April–June) for migratory birds and autumn (September–November) for the golden oak woods of the Sierra de Gata. Avoid July and August because of extreme heat (>40°C). The best times are at sunrise or late afternoon.

Is it accessible for people with reduced mobility?

Only partially. The main viewpoint has adapted paving, but 90% of the area consists of uneven rural paths. Contact the Provincial Council of Cáceres (+34 927 255 300) for details about accessible routes.

What other interesting places are nearby?

Within a 30 km radius you have: 1) Hoyos (a medieval village), 2) Robledillo de Gata (with its olive oil museum), 3) Sanctuary of Our Lady of La Vega (Trevejo), and 4) the incredible natural pools of Descargamaría. More information at SierraDeGata.info.

What advice would you give for the visit?

1) Hiking footwear is essential because of the rocky terrain 2) Bring water and sunscreen (there is no shade) 3) Binoculars for birdwatching 4) Take your rubbish with you (there are no bins nearby) 5) If you go to unofficial swimming areas, check water levels at the Tagus River Basin Authority (tel. 927 244 200).
