❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What time can the Alcántara Bridge be visited, and is there an entrance fee?

The bridge is always accessible as it is an open-air monument. To visit the Bridge Interpretation Center, we recommend checking opening hours at Extremadura Tourism. Access to the bridge is free.

Is it free to visit the Alcántara Bridge, or do I need to buy a ticket?

Visiting the bridge itself is completely free. There may only be a charge if you enter the interior of the small entrance temple (depending on opening times) or the Interpretation Center, although it is usually free.

How much time is recommended for the full visit?

Between exploring the bridge, reading the information panels, and taking photos, 45–60 minutes is recommended. If you also include the Interpretation Center and a walk around the surroundings, allow 1.5–2 hours.

What historical importance does this bridge have?

It is a masterpiece of Roman engineering (AD 106) that crossed the Tagus on the Silver Route. At 194 meters long and 70 meters high, it was built under Trajan with granite ashlar blocks without mortar.

What time of year or time of day is best to visit?

Spring and autumn are best for mild temperatures. In summer, go early or at sunset to avoid extreme heat. Sunrise offers the best photos with golden light over the river.

Is it accessible for wheelchairs or people with reduced mobility?

The area near the bridge has uneven ground and steps. It is not fully accessible, although it can be enjoyed from viewpoints. For details, contact the town hall: 927 26 00 01.

What other places of interest can I see near the bridge?

In Alcántara, visit the Conventual of San Benito (16th century) and the medieval old town. Five kilometers away is Spain’s largest dam on the Tagus. More info at: Extremadura Tourism.

Do you have any practical tips to make the most of the visit?

Wear non-slip footwear (the granite is slippery), and bring water and a hat in summer. Do not miss the original inscription on the triumphal arch («Pontem perpetui...») or the views from the caliphal tower in the center of the bridge.
