Between 30 and 45 minutes is enough to appreciate its architecture and interior. This includes time to see the tomb of Saint Peter of Alcántara, the side chapels, and its impressive main altarpiece.
It is a gem of Romanesque-Gothic architecture (13th century) built over an Arab mosque ('Almocóvar'). It stands out for housing the remains of Saint Peter of Alcántara, the local patron saint, and for its imposing military-influenced bell tower.
Spring and autumn, thanks to the mild temperatures. Avoid August if you are looking for a quieter visit. Tuesday and Thursday mornings are usually less busy than weekends.
There is ramp access at the main entrance, but inside there are steps in the side chapels and uneven flooring in historic areas. The Tourist Office lends wheelchairs with prior reservation.
Less than a 5-minute walk away are the Roman Bridge of Alcántara (2nd century) and the Convent of Saint Benedict. We also recommend the Saint Benedict Foundation Museum with its Renaissance cloister.
Wear comfortable shoes (cobbled ground), respect silence during religious services, and combine your visit with the viewpoint over the Roman bridge. More info: Extremadura Tourism.
