General admission costs €2, with discounts for pensioners and groups. On Sundays, entry is free. No advance booking is required for individual visits. More details at turismoalcantara.es.

How much time is recommended for the visit?

A full visit takes between 1 and 1.5 hours. It includes the Renaissance cloister, the chapter house, the Interpretation Center of the Roman Bridge, and the permanent exhibition on the Order of Alcántara.

What historical importance does this monument have?

It was the headquarters of the Military Order of Alcántara from the 16th century onward. Its Renaissance architecture and Plateresque cloister make it one of the most important monastic ensembles in Extremadura, with more than 500 years of history.

What is the best time of year to visit?

Spring and autumn are ideal thanks to the mild weather. Avoid July and August because of the extreme heat. Mornings are less crowded.

Just 300 meters away is the famous Roman Bridge of Alcántara. You can also visit the Interpretation Center of the Military Order and the beautiful medieval old town.

What tips would you give to enjoy the visit more?

Wear comfortable shoes (the ground is cobbled), take advantage of the free audio guides, and in summer bring water and sun protection. Don’t miss the views of the Roman Bridge from the terrace of the interpretation center.
