The New Castle of Manzanares El Real, also known as the Castle of the Mendoza Family, is usually open Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (last entry at 5:00 p.m.), and Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (last entry at 5:30 p.m.). It is closed on non-holiday Mondays, December 24, 25, and 31, and January 1 and 6. I recommend checking the official website to confirm opening hours before your visit, as they may vary seasonally: Official Castle Page. It is located about 60 km from Madrid and can be reached by car or bus.
General admission to Manzanares El Real Castle costs €5. Reduced tickets at €2.50 are available for retirees, unemployed visitors, students, and people with disabilities, as well as free admission for children under 3, ICOMOS/ICOM members, and certain other specific cases. I recommend checking the latest prices and possible promotions on the Community of Madrid website or at the ticket office. You can buy tickets directly there.
To fully enjoy Manzanares El Real Castle and its interior, including courtyards, exhibition rooms, and panoramic views, I would recommend allowing between 1.5 and 2 hours. If you stop to read all the information panels and enjoy the surroundings, it could take a little longer. Keep in mind that if there are temporary exhibitions, you may need some extra time.
This castle-palace, built in the 15th century by the House of Mendoza, is one of the best examples of late Gothic military and palatial architecture in the Community of Madrid. Its importance lies in being a symbol of the power and influence of one of the most prominent noble families in Castile at the time, as well as in its excellent state of preservation and the legends that surround it.
The spring months (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are usually the most pleasant times to visit, as the weather is mild and the natural surroundings are at their best. To avoid crowds, I suggest visiting early in the morning just after opening, or late in the afternoon before closing. Weekdays are also usually less crowded than weekends.
Manzanares El Real Castle has made efforts to improve accessibility. Some ground-floor areas and the courtyard are accessible for people with reduced mobility and wheelchair users. However, due to its medieval structure with stairs and uneven levels, not all floors or towers are fully accessible. It is advisable to contact the castle directly before your visit for detailed information about accessible sections and possible facilities: Phone +34 918 530 008.
Manzanares El Real is located in a privileged natural setting, the Upper Manzanares Basin Regional Park, declared a Biosphere Reserve. You can enjoy hiking routes in La Pedriza, visit the Santillana Reservoir (also known as the Manzanares El Real Reservoir) for a walk or birdwatching, and explore the picturesque town with its church and streets. You can also find restaurants where you can try the local cuisine.
Of course. I recommend comfortable footwear, as there are stairs and you will do a fair amount of walking. If you go during warm weather, bring water and sun protection, and in winter, warm clothing. Consider downloading a guide or audio guide to enrich your experience (for example, with services such as IAudioguia for future sites). If you enjoy photography, take advantage of the panoramic views from the towers and the courtyard. And don’t forget to check for special events that may coincide with your visit!
