Discover Les Ferreres Aqueduct in Tarragona. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
Les Ferreres Aqueduct is open to the public all year round, 24 hours a day, as it is located in an accessible public space. You can get there by car via the N-340 between Tarragona and Valencia, with free parking available near the monument; there is also public transport from Tarragona. For more details, see the official Tarragona Tourism website.
Visiting Les Ferreres Aqueduct is completely free, with no need to buy tickets. You only have to pay for parking if you use it, but it is inexpensive. If you plan to join an optional guided visit, contact the Tarragona visitor center at +34 977 23 63 53 to book.
It is recommended to allow between 1 and 2 hours to explore the aqueduct on foot, climb up to the arches, and enjoy the views. If you include photos and a walk around the surrounding area, it could take a little longer. It is a relaxed visit, ideal for a half-day trip.
Built in the 1st century AD by the Romans, this aqueduct carried water from the Gaià River to Tarraco (present-day Tarragona), stretching 260 meters and featuring up to 36 impressive arches. It represents Roman hydraulic engineering and is a testament to the importance of Tarraco as a provincial capital; it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 as part of the Archaeological Ensemble of Tarragona.
Spring (March-May) or autumn (September-November) are ideal thanks to the mild weather and fewer crowds. Visit at sunset for spectacular photos in golden light, or early in the morning to avoid the summer heat; avoid July and August if you do not like high temperatures.
The main access is wheelchair accessible in the lower area and parking zone, but climbing to the upper arches involves stairs and uneven ground, which makes it challenging. It is recommended to contact the Tarragona tourist information center (+34 977 23 63 53) for assistance options or adapted routes; there are good views from below.
Nearby, about 5-10 km away, you can visit the Roman Amphitheatre and Tarragona Cathedral, both part of the UNESCO heritage area. There is also Columbretes Islands National Park if you are interested in marine nature. Combine your visit with a tour of Tarragona's historic center for a complete experience; more info at Tarragona Tourism.
