Discover the Walls of Segovia in Ávila. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
The Walls of Ávila are open all year round, with free pedestrian access from several bridges such as Ardillo Bridge and San Segundo Bridge. To climb up to the battlements and walk along the wall walk, opening hours are from April to October, 10:00 am to 8:00 pm, and from November to March, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. You can buy tickets at the ticket office or online through the official Ávila Tourism website.
Access to the outer perimeter of the walls is free, allowing for a walk around the city. To go up onto the walls and enjoy the views, admission costs €5 for adults, €4 for seniors, and is free for children under 6. Discounts are available for families and groups on the official tourism website.
It is recommended to allow at least 1–2 hours to walk along the upper wall walk (1.5 km) and enjoy the panoramic views. If you combine it with a walk around the exterior, you could extend your visit to 3 hours. It is ideal for a relaxed morning or late afternoon visit.
Built in the 11th century under Alfonso VI, the Walls of Ávila are among the best-preserved in Europe, with a length of 2.5 km, 88 towers, and 9 gates, symbolizing the city's medieval defenses. They have been part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985 and represent the Christian heritage of the Reconquista. Their Romanesque architecture makes them a cultural icon of Castile and León.
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are ideal thanks to the mild weather and fewer tourists, avoiding the summer heat. Sunrise or sunset offers stunning views with golden light, and weekends in the low season are quieter. Avoid midday in July and August to escape the intense sun.
The outer perimeter is accessible, with ramps and paved paths, but going up to the upper wall walk involves stairs and is not recommended for wheelchairs. There are limited elevators at some access points, such as the one at Malmuerta Bridge; check in advance by calling the tourist information number (+34 920 211 387). An adapted guided tour is recommended for greater comfort.
Inside the walls, visit Ávila Cathedral or the Convent of Saint Teresa, both just a few minutes' walk away. Outside, the Palace of the Ávilas and the Valley of the Fallen are a short drive away. Explore the historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for a complete experience; more details are available on the Ávila Tourism website.
Wear comfortable shoes for walking and sunscreen, as there are exposed sections. Join an audio guide or guided tour for €3–€5 to learn more about its history, available at the visitor center. If you are traveling in a group, book tickets in advance during high season through the official website to avoid queues.
