Discover Sant Joan Castle in Blanes. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
The castle is open every day throughout the year, but it has no fixed hours since access to its exterior areas is free (both the parade ground and the surroundings of the monument). To get there, you will need to walk about 15–20 minutes from the center of Blanes along a cobbled path. The route is well signposted from S'Abanell Beach.
No, access to the castle is completely free. As it is an open-air monument with no museum or indoor exhibitions, no tickets or advance reservations are required.
It is recommended to allow between 30 and 45 minutes to enjoy the castle. This includes the initial climb, exploring the walls, taking in the panoramic views, and taking photographs. If you include the walk from central Blanes, allow 1.5–2 hours in total.
Built in the 16th century during the reign of Philip II, it served as a watchtower against Barbary pirates. It is the symbol of Blanes and appears on the town's coat of arms. In 1972, it was declared a Site of Cultural Interest. More historical details: Blanes Town Hall
Early morning or late afternoon in summer is best to avoid the heat. Spring is ideal because of the blooming vegetation. Sunsets are spectacular. In July, you can combine your visit with the famous fireworks displays launched from there.
The climb to the castle is steep, with uneven steps and cobbled ground. There are no ramps or lifts. It is only recommended for people with reduced mobility if they are accompanied and aware of the difficulties. You can enjoy partial views from the base.
On the same hill as the castle: Marimurtra Botanical Garden (official website) and the Sa Palomera viewpoint. In the town center: Santa Maria Church (14th century) and the fishing port with fresh seafood restaurants.
Wear non-slip sports shoes (the stones may be slippery), bring sun protection, water, and a camera. Be careful with small children near the walls without railings. The visit is recommended only in good weather (avoid rainy or very windy days).
