¿Sabías que en esta colina descansan soldados ingleses que murieron 'liberando' San Sebastián... y casi la borran del mapa?
Mount Urgull is open 24 hours a day all year round, with free access via pedestrian paths from San Sebastián's Old Town. You can walk up in about 20–30 minutes; the main access is via Portaletas or from the Egia neighborhood. More info on the official Mount Urgull website.
Visiting Mount Urgull and its paths is completely free. La Mota Castle and the Interpretation Center are also free to enter, with no tickets required. Check updates at San Sebastián Tourism.
It is recommended to allow between 1 and 2 hours to walk the main paths, visit La Mota Castle, and enjoy the panoramic views. If you include the Interpretation Center, add another 30 minutes. It is ideal for a relaxed morning or evening visit.
Mount Urgull has been a key defensive stronghold since the 12th century, with La Mota Castle built in the 15th century to protect San Sebastián from invasions. Today it is a natural park with walls, batteries, and an interpretation center explaining its role in battles such as the one in 1813. It represents the city's military and cultural history.
Sunrise or sunset offers the best views of La Concha Bay and the San Sebastián skyline, with less heat in summer. Spring and autumn are ideal thanks to the mild weather and fewer tourists; avoid midday in July and August because of the intense sun.
The main access is via steep paths, but there is a lift to La Mota Castle from the base, making it easier to reach the top for wheelchair users. Parts of the upper area are accessible, although some paths are uneven; check monteurgull.eus for updated details.
Nearby you will find the Old Town with its pintxos, the San Sebastián Aquarium a 10-minute walk away, and La Concha Beach across the bridge. There is also Mount Ulia for more hiking; combine it with a walk around San Sebastián Bay.
Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and use sunscreen, as there are steep climbs. Download the map from the official website or use the San Sebastián Tourism app; go early to avoid crowds and combine it with breakfast in the Old Town. Info phone: +34 943 416 000.
