Donde piratas berberiscos, contrabandistas y vigilantes escribieron una historia de sal y rocas afiladas
The Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs are open to the public year-round, 24 hours a day, as they are a protected natural area. You can access them from the Maro parking lot (free) or from Cantarriján Beach. It is recommended to arrive by car or public transport to Maro and then walk for about 20-30 minutes to the cliffs. More information here.
Visiting the cliffs is completely free, as it is a public natural area. However, if you access from Cantarriján Beach, keep in mind that during high season (June-September) parking may have a fee. There are no ticket booths or entrance fees—just enjoy the scenery!
It is recommended to spend between 2 and 3 hours exploring the cliffs at a leisurely pace, especially if you want to do one of the hiking routes such as the one leading to the Maro Tower or descending to the hidden coves. If you only want to enjoy the panoramic views, 1 hour may be enough.
The Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs have been a protected natural area since 1989, famous for their biodiversity and unique rock formations. In addition, the area contains archaeological remains such as the Maro Tower, an old 16th-century watchtower built to defend the coast from pirates. They were also the setting for films such as 'The Golden Voyage of Sinbad' (1973).
The best season is from April to October, when the weather is warmer and the sea is calm. To avoid crowds, visit early in the morning (8:00-10:00) or at sunset (18:00-20:00 in summer), when the light is spectacular for photos. In winter, sunny days are ideal for hiking without extreme heat.
The main access from the Maro parking lot is not wheelchair accessible, as there are paths with stairs and uneven terrain. However, from the viewpoint on the MA-5105 road (near 'El Mirador' restaurant) there are panoramic views accessible by car. For more details, check this local guide.
Less than 10 minutes by car is the town of Nerja, where you can visit the Balcón de Europa and the Nerja Cave. Also nearby are Burriana and Maro beaches, and the white village of Frigiliana (15 minutes away). If you enjoy hiking, the Río Chillar route (in summer) is another incredible option.
Wear comfortable footwear (preferably hiking boots), bring water and sun protection, as there are areas without shade. If you want to explore the coves, bring a towel and shoes for rocky surfaces. Avoid windy days, as the cliffs can be dangerous. And don't forget your camera—the views are incredible! For more tips, check the official Andalusia guide.
