The Hermitage of Our Lady of the Rock in Mijas is usually open during the day, although specific hours may vary. It generally opens from 10:00 to 18:00 or 19:00. You can check the exact timetable on the official Mijas Tourism website. It is carved into the rock in the center of the village of Mijas and is easily reached on foot from anywhere in Mijas Pueblo.
Good news! Visiting the Hermitage of Our Lady of the Rock is completely free. It is one of those treasures that Mijas offers at no cost, allowing you to enjoy its history and natural beauty without spending anything. You may leave a donation if you wish.
For the hermitage itself, about 15 to 20 minutes is enough to admire its uniqueness and the image of the Virgin. However, we recommend taking the opportunity to explore the surrounding area and the panoramic views, which may take an hour or more in total.
The Hermitage of Our Lady of the Rock is a place of great history and significance. It was carved into the rock by Mercedarian friars in the 17th century and houses the image of Mijas’s patron saint, Our Lady of the Rock, who according to legend appeared to two young shepherds. It is a symbol of faith and tradition for the town and a place of pilgrimage. Learn more about its legend on the Mijas Tourism website.
For a quieter visit, I recommend going early in the morning or late in the afternoon, especially during the high season months of summer. As for the time of year, spring and autumn are ideal thanks to the pleasant weather and fewer tourists. Avoid the middle of the day in summer.
Because it is carved into the rock and located in an area with slopes, access to the interior of the hermitage may be somewhat difficult for people with reduced mobility or wheelchair users. The entrance and interior space are limited, but the surrounding area and panoramic views are more accessible, allowing you to enjoy the setting.
Mijas Pueblo is full of charm. Right next to the hermitage you can visit the bullring, the gardens, and the Muralla viewpoint, which offer spectacular views. I also suggest a walk through its picturesque white streets, seeing the donkey taxis, and visiting the Miniatures Museum. There is plenty to explore!
I recommend wearing comfortable shoes, as Mijas Pueblo is ideal for exploring on foot along its cobbled streets. Don’t forget your camera to capture the stunning views. If you are coming by car, look for parking in the municipal car park near the center. And of course, allow yourself to get a little lost and discover charming corners!
