Discover Gibralfaro Castle in Malaga. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
Gibralfaro Castle has opening hours that vary by season. It is generally open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. or 8:00 p.m., but it is best to check the official website of the Malaga City Council. You can walk up from the Alcazaba, take the tourist bus, a taxi, or city bus line 35 departing from Alameda Principal.
General admission to Gibralfaro Castle usually costs around €3.50. Reduced tickets are available for students, retirees, and groups. On Sundays, from 2:00 p.m. until closing, admission is free. You can find more details on the website of Malaga Tourism.
To explore Gibralfaro Castle at a relaxed pace, including its viewpoints and interpretation center, I recommend allowing between 1 hour and 1 hour 30 minutes. If you combine it with the Alcazaba, plan at least 3 to 4 hours for both monumental sites.
Gibralfaro Castle is a symbol of Malaga's history. Built in the 14th century to defend the Alcazaba, it also served as a Phoenician lighthouse site—hence its name, 'Jabal-Faruh,' or mountain of the lighthouse—and as a defensive fortress. It was crucial during the Reconquest and later as a royal residence, offering a unique insight into the military strategy of the time.
The best time to visit is early in the morning, right when it opens, or late in the afternoon, especially at sunset, to enjoy spectacular views with less heat and fewer crowds. As for the time of year, spring and autumn are ideal, with mild temperatures and fewer tourists than in summer.
Unfortunately, due to its structure and uneven terrain, Gibralfaro Castle is not fully accessible for people with reduced mobility or wheelchair users. There are steep slopes and stairs. However, you can reach the main entrance by bus or taxi, and from there some panoramic viewing areas are accessible.
Very close to Gibralfaro Castle is the Alcazaba, which you can reach on foot or visit with a combined ticket. You can also head down toward the Roman Theatre and Malaga's historic center, where you will find the Cathedral, the Picasso Museum, and a wide range of dining and shopping options.
Wear comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and bring a bottle of water, especially in summer, as there is little shade. Consider the combined ticket with the Alcazaba to save time and money. And most importantly, do not forget your camera! The panoramic views of the city and the bay are stunning, especially if you go at sunset.
