A ruined medieval fortress crowning a hill above the Đetinja River, bearing witness to centuries of history and battles.
The Old Town (Stari Grad) is open 24 hours a day year-round, as it is open-air ruins that are freely accessible. You can reach it on foot from the center of Užice, climbing a hill along a steep path that takes about 15–20 minutes; parking is available nearby. More info on the official Užice Tourism website.
Admission is completely free, with no ticket purchase required. You will only pay if you choose to join an optional guided tour organized by the local tourism center, which costs around 500–1000 RSD per person.
It is recommended to spend 1 to 2 hours exploring the walls, towers, and panoramic views at a relaxed pace. If you include photos and a picnic, it could extend to half a morning.
Built in the 13th century as a medieval fortress, it was an Ottoman stronghold and, above all, the seat of the first Yugoslav Partisan republic during World War II in 1941. It represents a key symbol of Serbian resistance.
The best time is during summer (June–September) to enjoy good weather and local festivals, preferably at sunset for impressive views of the Đetinja River. Avoid winter because of snow and cold.
It is not very accessible due to steep paths, stairs, and uneven terrain on the hill. It is recommended for people with good mobility; there are no ramps or elevators available.
Nearby you will find the Partisan Memorial (a 10-minute walk away), the Đetinja River for walks, and the historic center with the Cultural Center. The Užice cable car also goes to Stopića Cave, a few kilometers away.
Bring comfortable shoes, water, and sunscreen for the climb; visit early to avoid the heat. Download an offline map or use the local tourism app, and combine your visit with lunch at downtown restaurants such as 'Kod Konaka'.
