Discover Skull Tower in Niš. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
Skull Tower (Ćele Kula) is usually open Tuesday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM and on weekends from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, remaining closed on Mondays. It is located on Dr Zorana Đinđića Boulevard, easily accessible by bus from central Niš. To confirm holiday hours, visit the National Museum of Niš.
General admission is around 300 RSD (Serbian dinars), with discounts for students and groups. There is a highly recommended combined ticket that includes access to the Crveni Krst Concentration Camp and the Archaeological Museum.
The visit is brief but intense; generally, 30 to 45 minutes are enough to appreciate the structure and read the historical information. It is a perfect stop to combine with other points of interest in one morning.
It is a unique monument in the world, built by the Ottomans in 1809 using the skulls of Serbian rebels who fell at the Battle of Čegar as a warning. Today, it represents a powerful symbol of the struggle for freedom and Serbian independence.
We recommend going early in the morning (around 9:30 AM) to avoid the crowds from tour buses. Spring and autumn offer the best weather for walking from the city center to the monument.
The tower is protected inside a chapel with ground-level access, making entry easier for wheelchair users. However, the interior space around the tower is somewhat narrow, so visiting with a companion is recommended.
A short distance away, you can visit the archaeological site of Mediana (the residence of Emperor Constantine) and Niš Fortress in the city center. You can easily find these places on this map: View location on Maps.
Bring cash in Serbian dinars in case the card terminal is not working, and dress respectfully, as this is a funerary memorial site. To truly understand the history behind each skull, using an audio guide is highly recommended.
