An audio journey through the tourist heart of Puerto Plata, exploring its history, design, and Caribbean charm.
The Playa Dorada complex and its common areas are open 24 hours a day, but the recommended beach hours are from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The golf course usually operates from 7:00 AM until sunset; you can easily get there by taxi or private transport from downtown Puerto Plata.
Access to the public beach area and the Plaza Playa Dorada shopping center is free. However, to play on the golf course you need to pay the green fee; you can check current rates on the official Playa Dorada Golf Course website.
If you plan to enjoy a beach day and some shopping, we recommend setting aside at least half a day (4–5 hours). For a full 18-hole round of golf, allow about 4 and a half hours to enjoy the game without rushing.
Playa Dorada is a historic milestone as the first major tourist destination developed on the country’s North Coast. Its golf course is legendary, designed in 1976 by the famous architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., putting Puerto Plata on the world map.
The best time is between December and April to avoid the rainy season. We suggest going early in the morning (before 10:00 AM) to find calmer seas and avoid the intense midday heat on the golf course.
The complex has paved sidewalks, and the shopping center is wheelchair accessible. However, direct access to the beach sand may be limited and may require assistance if amphibious equipment is not available.
You are just 10 minutes from the historic center of Puerto Plata. From there, you can visit the famous Cable Car, Central Park, and the historic San Felipe Fortress, ideal for exploring with an audio guide.
Bring cash in Dominican pesos to buy handicrafts on the beach, and use biodegradable sunscreen to help protect the reef. Don’t forget to visit the shopping center inside the complex to find safe food options and souvenirs.
