General admission and parking are completely free, making it an excellent option for a family visit. However, activities such as kayak rentals or guided tours are offered by private companies and have an additional cost.
For a full experience that includes walking the trails and enjoying the scenery, we recommend setting aside between 2 and 3 hours. If you plan to go kayaking or do intensive nature photography, consider dedicating half a day.
It is recognized as one of the few natural freshwater lagoons on the island, although it has some saline mixing, and the largest in Puerto Rico. Its ecological value is immense because of its biodiversity, serving as home to endangered species and a great variety of migratory birds.
The best time is early in the morning, between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., when the sun is less intense and bird activity is higher. Visiting on weekdays ensures a quieter and more private experience compared with weekends.
Accessibility is limited; although the parking area and main gazebos are flat, the natural trails can be difficult to navigate in a wheelchair. It is recommended to go with a companion and check in advance with the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources about the condition of the ramps.
You can complement your day by visiting the famous Puerto Nuevo Beach, known as Mar Bella Beach, which is just a few minutes away. It is also recommended to visit Ojo de Agua Spring to cool off after the hike.
It is essential to bring insect repellent, sunscreen, plenty of water, and comfortable closed-toe shoes for the trails. Always stay on the marked paths and respect the signage about local wildlife, including warnings about caimans.
