A coastal paradise in southern Puerto Rico, famous for its tranquility and unique geological formation.
The beach is located at the end of Road 333 in Guánica, just past the Copamarina resort. As it is a public beach and part of a reserve, it is generally accessible during daylight hours, although visiting between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM is recommended for greater safety.
Admission to Playa Ballena is completely free for all visitors. Parking is usually available in designated areas along the road or at the entrance, with no fixed fee, although during high season it is wise to arrive early to find a space.
We recommend allowing 1 to 2 hours if you only plan to walk and take photos. If you plan to explore the nearby trails of Guánica Dry Forest or have a picnic, set aside half a day to enjoy this unique landscape without rushing.
This beach is part of the Guánica Biosphere Reserve (UNESCO) and is a crucial nesting site for endangered sea turtles. Its subtropical dry forest ecosystem is one of the best preserved in the world.
The best time is early in the morning or at sunset to avoid the intense midday sun and enjoy spectacular light. The winter months, from December to April, offer more pleasant temperatures and lower humidity.
Access may be limited, because although there are paved areas near the parking area, the sandy terrain makes wheelchair access to the shoreline difficult. For updated information on facilities, check with the Department of Natural Resources.
You are minutes from the famous Guánica State Forest and very close to the boats that take visitors to Cayo Aurora (Gilligan's Island). You can also visit the historic Fort Caprón for incredible panoramic views.
Swimming is not recommended because of strong surf and rip currents; this is a beach for sightseeing and walking. Bring plenty of water, a hat, and sunscreen, as shade is scarce in this dry forest environment.
