¿Sabías que este gigante de agua salvó pueblos enteros de ahogarse, pero primero ahogó sueños de familias locales?
Patillas Dam is open 24 hours a day, but visiting during daylight is recommended for safety. You can easily get there via PR-184 from Patillas; use Google Maps for precise directions or check the AAA website at acueductospr.com.
Admission to Patillas Dam is completely free, with no visitor fees. Only if you plan to fish might you need a fishing license from the Department of Natural Resources, available on its website.
A typical visit lasts 1 to 2 hours, ideal for walking around the reservoir, enjoying the views, and having a picnic. If you include fishing or swimming, extend it to half a day.
Built between 1914 and 1919 by the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA), the dam controls flooding and supplies drinking water to the southeastern region of Puerto Rico. It is a landmark of early engineering on the island and a key spot for local recreation.
The best time is during the dry season, from December to April, to avoid rain, and early in the morning for cooler views and less heat. Avoid rainy weekends for greater comfort.
The main access is reachable by paved road, but the trails around it are uneven and not recommended for wheelchairs. Contact AAA at (787) 323-4040 for details about adapted areas.
Nearby you will find Guayabitos Beach (10 minutes by car), Guánica State Forest (30 minutes), and Patillas Beach. Explore more at Discover Puerto Rico for itinerary ideas.
Bring mosquito repellent, water, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes; don’t forget to take your trash to help keep the area clean. Check the weather at Weather.com and respect the rule against camping without permission.
