Mar Chiquita Beach is open to the public all day, but visiting between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM is recommended for safety. To get there, take PR-648 in Manatí. There is a small parking area near the pedestrian access. More location details at Puerto Rico DRNA.
Yes, access is completely free. However, nearby parking is limited, and some locals may charge for parking on private land. Arriving early is recommended.
Most visitors spend between 1 and 2 hours. That is enough time to explore the natural pool, take photos, and relax. If you plan to swim, add an extra 30 minutes, although swimming depends on wave conditions.
Mar Chiquita Beach is unique for its horseshoe-shaped rock formation that creates a pool of calm water. These rocks are remnants of a fossilized reef from millions of years ago, according to the Geological Survey of Puerto Rico.
The dry season, from December to April, offers clearer days. Mornings, from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM, are ideal for avoiding crowds and enjoying lower tides. Avoid days with high surf warnings.
Access requires walking over uneven ground with rocks and sand. There are no adapted ramps or boardwalks, so it is not recommended for wheelchairs. The last stretch to the natural pool includes natural steps.
Nearby you will find: - Los Tubos Beach (5 minutes by car), famous for surfing - Vega Alta State Forest (15 minutes) with trails - The city of Arecibo (25 minutes) and its Observatory (currently closed, check for reopening).
1) Wear non-slip shoes for the slippery rocks 2) Avoid swimming in strong surf conditions (check the marine report) 3) Bring water and sunscreen, as there is little shade available 4) Do not leave trash behind: it is a protected area.
