As it is a public beach, access is allowed throughout the day, although we recommend visiting during daylight hours, generally from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. It is located in the Islote neighborhood of Arecibo, right behind the historic lighthouse; you can easily get there by following PR-655 to the end.
Admission to the beach and the natural area is completely free for all visitors. However, keep in mind that nearby parking lots may be privately operated and charge a small fee, usually between $3 and $5 per vehicle.
To enjoy a relaxing swim and take great photographs, we recommend setting aside 2 to 3 hours. If you plan to combine it with a visit to the adjacent lighthouse, consider reserving half a day for the full experience.
This place owes its name to Bishop Juan Alejo de Arizmendi, the first Puerto Rican bishop, who according to history was miraculously saved from drowning here (or used to visit it for bathing) in the 18th century. It is an emblematic site located at the foot of the Arecibo Lighthouse & Historical Park.
The ideal time is early in the morning on weekdays to find calmer water and avoid crowds. During the summer months, visitor numbers are higher, so the low season (from September to November) offers a more private experience.
As it is a natural reserve with sandy and rocky terrain, direct access to the water is limited for wheelchairs. However, you can still enjoy the panoramic views from the paved areas near the parking lot and around the lighthouse.
You are in a strategic location; right next door you have Arecibo Lighthouse Park, and just a few minutes away by car you will find the impressive Indian Cave. You can also visit the Columbus Statue, one of the largest in the world, located in the same area.
Although the rocks reduce the force of the waves, stay alert to strong currents, especially if you are visiting with children. Bring sunscreen, water shoes for the rocks, and remember that glass bottles are not allowed on the sand in order to protect the ecosystem.
