❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What time does Charco El Ataúd open, and how can I get there?

Access is free during all daylight hours (generally from 6 am to 6 pm). It is located on Road 518, km 9.9, in Adjuntas. We recommend confirming weather conditions with the Adjuntas Tourism Office at (787) 829-0000 before your visit.

Do I have to pay an entrance fee to visit Charco El Ataúd?

No, access is completely free. It is a natural attraction with no cost to visitors, although voluntary donations for the maintenance of the area are appreciated.

How much time is needed to fully enjoy the place?

We recommend setting aside 1 to 2 hours, including the access trail (15–20 minutes walking) and time to enjoy the natural pool. Allow extra time if you plan to swim.

Why is this pool called 'El Ataúd'?

It owes its name to its distinctive elongated, rectangular shape, which resembles a natural coffin. This 8-meter-deep pool was formed by rock erosion and is a unique geological symbol in the Central Mountain Range.

What is the best time of year to visit?

The dry season (December to April) is ideal, when water levels are safer. Weekday mornings are less crowded. Avoid days after heavy rain because of dangerous currents.

Is the place accessible for people with reduced mobility?

Access requires walking along natural trails with steep slopes and uneven terrain. It is not recommended for wheelchairs. Closed athletic shoes with good grip are required.

What other interesting places can I visit nearby?

In Adjuntas, you can visit Guilarte Forest (the highest peak in Puerto Rico), the town of Adjuntas with its traditional architecture, and Garzas Lake. Also nearby is Hacienda La Parcera Coffee Farm.

What should I bring for my visit?

Essentials: water, sunscreen, non-slip footwear, and a swimsuit under your clothes. Recommended: a basic first-aid kit, a quick-dry towel, and a waterproof bag for electronics. TAKE ALL YOUR TRASH WITH YOU!
