Una ruta donde el granito y la uva guardan secretos de reyes, falsificadores y viñateros rebeldes
The Dão Wine Route does not have a single set schedule, as it brings together multiple wineries and estates. We recommend contacting directly the wineries you wish to visit to find out their specific hours and to arrange reservations, since many require an appointment. You can find a list of producers on the official Vinhos do Dão website: Vinhos do Dão Producers.
Access to the Dão Wine Route as a concept is free, but guided winery tours and wine tastings usually have a cost. Each winery sets its own rates, which may vary depending on the experience (vineyard tour, cellar visit, tasting of different wines, food pairings). It is advisable to check prices directly with the wineries before your visit.
For a complete and unhurried experience, we suggest dedicating at least a full day to the Dão Wine Route in the Nelas region. This will allow you to visit 2-3 wineries, enjoy tastings, have lunch at a local restaurant, and appreciate the landscape. If you wish to explore further or visit nearby villages, consider a two-day stay.
Dão is one of the oldest wine regions in Portugal, officially demarcated in 1908. Historically, its wines were known for their longevity and structure, often produced on small estates and at cooperatives. Today, the region is a benchmark for elegant and complex wines, with native varieties such as Touriga Nacional taking the leading role, reflecting a rich winemaking heritage.
The best time to visit the Dão Wine Route is during spring (April-June), when the vineyards are in full bloom and the weather is mild, or during autumn (September-October), coinciding with the harvest and the beautiful colours of the foliage. In summer (July-August) it can get quite hot, although it is ideal for local festivals.
Accessibility on the Dão Wine Route varies considerably between the different wineries and estates. Some modern facilities may be fully adapted, while older wineries might have limitations. We strongly recommend contacting directly the wineries you are interested in to ask about their specific access facilities before your visit.
Near Nelas, you can explore the historic city of Viseu, known for its impressive Sé (Cathedral) and historic centre. You can also visit the Caldas da Felgueira thermal spa to relax, or discover the many picturesque villages of the region with their traditional architecture and local cuisine. The Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain in mainland Portugal, is also within manageable distance for excursions.
Absolutely. We advise booking winery visits in advance, especially during high season, to secure your spot. Consider designating a sober driver or using private transport for the tastings. Also, don't forget to wear comfortable shoes for walking through the vineyards and a hat or sunscreen during the warmer months. And of course, enjoy the incredible local cuisine that pairs perfectly with Dão wines!
