Ammaia was a Roman city founded in the 1st century AD, with remains of baths, a theater, forum, and homes that show daily Roman life in Lusitania. It is one of the best-preserved archaeological sites in Portugal, notable for its role as an administrative and commercial center.
Spring (March-May) or autumn (September-October) are ideal because of the mild weather and fewer tourists; avoid midday in summer because of the heat. At sunrise or sunset, it offers spectacular views with fewer people.
Access is partially accessible: there are paved paths in the main areas, but some archaeological sections have uneven surfaces and stairs. Contact the visitor center (+351 245 993 243) for assistance or adapted routes.
In Marvão, just 5 km away, visit the Marvão Castle and its panoramic views. Also nearby is the São Mamede Mountain Range Natural Park for hiking.
Bring comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and water, as there is little shade. Download an audio guide at IAudioguia for detailed explanations in English, and combine it with a visit to Marvão for a perfect day.
