A coastal paradise in the Algarve, known for its unique rock formations and crystal-clear waters.
The beach is located in Lagos, Algarve, and is mainly accessed by the famous wooden boardwalk that connects the Porto de Mós area with the beach itself. There are no official restricted opening hours, as it is a public beach open to everyone, although pedestrian access is recommended during daylight hours. You can park in the Porto de Mós parking area and walk for about 10 minutes.
Access to Dona Ana Beach is completely free, as it is a public beach. However, keep in mind that renting sun loungers and umbrellas in the area comes at an additional cost, generally between €7.50 and €10 per set. Nearby parking in Porto de Mós usually has fees, especially during high season.
It is recommended to spend at least 2 to 3 hours enjoying the beach, swimming, and exploring the nearby caves. If you plan to take a boat trip to see the rock formations from the sea or walk to the nearby Porto de Mós Beach, we suggest setting aside half a day. The sunset light also makes it tempting to stay longer.
The beach owes its name, Dona Ana, to a former owner of the land located at the top of the cliff, although it was originally called Camilo. Historically, the area was shaped by the erosion of limestone rocks, creating one of the most photogenic landscapes in Lagos. Its striking rock formations and sunken caves are the result of coastal geological evolution.
The best time to visit is from late May to September, when the water is warmer and the skies are sunny. To avoid the crowds and enjoy the best photographic light, I recommend going very early in the morning (before 9:00 AM) or late in the afternoon. In winter, the beach is very windy and quiet, ideal for walks.
Unfortunately, Dona Ana Beach is not wheelchair accessible due to its rocky nature and the stairs leading down to the sand. The main access involves descending steps carved into the rock. However, the wooden boardwalk from Porto de Mós provides easy access to the upper viewpoint. For other accessible options, you can check local tourist information in Lagos.
Within walking distance to the west is Porto de Mós Beach, which is larger and accessible by car. To the east, you can visit the famous caves and Ponta da Piedade, or Camilo Beach. In the historic center of Lagos, about a 20-minute walk away, you will find the City Walls of Lagos and the Fort of Ponta da Bandeira. You can also book boat excursions from Lagos harbor.
Wear sports shoes or water sandals, as the rocks can be slippery when entering the sea. It is essential to bring your own shade, water, and sunscreen, as the beach is small and does not have many services, only a small seasonal kiosk. Also, watch the tides if you plan to explore the caves at the base of the cliff, and always respect the safety signs.
