A journey through the fortifications that have protected Évora over the centuries.
As a defensive structure surrounding the historic center, the walls are an open-air monument accessible 24 hours a day. You can easily enter from several points, although an ideal place to begin the route is through the Public Garden of Évora.
Visiting the Walls of Évora is completely free, as they form part of the city’s urban layout. You do not need to buy tickets or make advance reservations; simply enjoy the walk at your own pace.
For a full route around the main perimeter while enjoying the views, I recommend allowing between 60 and 90 minutes. If you only plan to visit the best-preserved sections near the Public Garden, 30 minutes will be enough.
These defenses are vital because Évora preserves two belts: the 'Old Wall' (Roman and Arab) and the 'New Wall' from the 14th century. Their excellent state of preservation was key to the city being declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Spring is ideal because of the weather and the flowers in the surroundings, while avoiding the intense heat of the Alentejo summer. The best time of day is undoubtedly sunset, when the golden light strikes the stone and creates spectacular photographs.
It depends on the section; the areas integrated into the Public Garden and the main gates are accessible and flat. However, the full outer route may have uneven paving and changes in level that can be difficult for wheelchairs.
You are very close to the best of the city; just a few minutes away on foot you will find the famous Roman Temple of Évora and the striking Chapel of Bones. It is the perfect starting point for a monumental route.
Wear very comfortable shoes because the ground is cobblestoned and you will walk quite a lot. I suggest starting at Porta de Alconchel, the main entrance protected by two large towers, to understand the defensive scale of the city.
